Hailing from the North of Scotland and in particular from the notoriously grey city of granite it could be initially confusing for the listener when presented with such a warm and inviting sound. Bench, having evolved from a simpler form of indie/hard-rock several years ago, now present a multi-instrumental wall of sound that is a decidedly introspective and picturesque take on the post-rock genre.

Their recent debut album is fine example of this that was recorded in an isolated farmhouse in rural Scotland during the previous winter. The sense of space and separation from the hustle and bustle of city life lending the band the time to layer sounds together into the rich tapestry that defines the album. With it’s blend of guitar, bass, drums, piano, cello, organ, synthesiser, percussions and vocals it is not difficult to see where people make a surface level connection with those bands synonymous with Iceland. For those who dive deeper though, richer treasures await.
