Mothboy is someone who could be quite hard to pin down. Mothboy could fall between a few different stools. But essentially, Mothboy is Simon Smerdon, a London based electronic musician who turned his back on playing bass for hardcore and metal bands when he left Devon behind in 1996.

Often pigeonholed in the curious "dark-hop" sub-sub-genre of recent times along with the likes of Scorn, Techno Animal and Spectre it's not unfair to say that Mothboy has his own distinct blend of huge bass and downtempo rhythms. Though electronic seems to be the key element here in reality the sound tends to be split as much as 50-50 between that and the organic. Jazzy piano motifs, squeals of sax and the
thudding of drum skins push through the walls of bass coalescing into the groove.

Drawing from the Beastie Boys as much as Basic Channel as much as Meat Beat Manifesto, Mothboy's isn't one that is too easy to clearly define. Nevertheless, it's a text book definition of head-nodding.
